Payday is still days away and a bill is due now. Beforepay is an Australian app that offers short-term advances against your wages. This is a general overview, not financial advice, and it is worth understanding the cost before you borrow.
1) How it works
You create an account (website or app), link your bank, and choose an amount. The site says an Instant Advance goes up to $2,000, with personal loans up to $5,000, and that approval takes minutes. Money lands in your bank account.

βοΈ Pros: quick, simple sign-up, funds go straight to your account
βοΈ Cons: it is a loan, so you owe it back whatever happens with your bills
2) The cost, in plain numbers
Canstarβs 2023 article describes a fixed 5% fee on the amount borrowed, due on your next payday, with up to four weeks to repay and no interest or late fees. That article is from April 2023, so confirm the current fees and terms on Beforepayβs own page before you borrow.
- Example: $200 advance = $10 fee. That can be reasonable once, but it adds up if you borrow often.
- If you did that every fortnight, 5% would be about 130% a year. If repaid over four weeks, it is closer to 65% a year. Those are my own calculations, to show why repeated use gets expensive.
βοΈ Pros: the cost is known up front, and it may be cheaper than some payday loans
βοΈ Cons: the fee is a cost you wouldnβt pay by waiting, and heavy use gets costly
3) Eligibility
Per Canstar, you need regular wages of at least $300 after tax a week. Self-employed people and those mainly on Centrelink are not eligible. Beforepay says it doesnβt do a credit check, but it looks at the income and spending on your linked account. Check the current criteria on the site.
4) Who it might suit, and who should pause
It can suit a one-off gap before payday. Canstar warns that regular use can be a sign of a cash-flow problem. If you are already behind on bills, talk to a free financial counsellor first: the National Debt Helpline is 1800 007 007, or see MoneySmart. If you receive Centrelink, ask about an advance payment at 13 17 94.
π¬ Final Verdict
Beforepay is a quick, transparent way to bridge a short gap, but it is still a loan with a fee. Borrow only what you can repay on payday, and read the current terms first.
